Ganges River :

               The Ganges River is a sacred water to Hindus that originates in the Himalayan Mountains and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The adjoining river basin has a population of over four crores. India is a riverine country. There are many small and big rivers spread all over India. Among which the longest and main river of India is Ganges.The total length of the Ganges is 2510 km Out of this 2017 km flow in India.The Ganga River originates from the Gomukh Cave in the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand's North Kashi District. Its place of origin is called Bhagirathi.


         The Bhagirathi originates from the Gomukh Tushar Cave of the Gangotri Glacier in the Kumaon Himalayas, flows through a narrow gorge and joins the Alkananda at Debprayag, and these two combined streams are known as the Ganges.Alkananda originates from the Shatapath glacier near Badrinath. Alkananda is formed by the confluence of Dhauli and Vishnu Ganga. Their meeting place is Joshimath or Vishnuprayag. Another branch of Alkananda met at Pinda's Karnaprayag.Alkananda is again joined by Mandakini or Kaliganga at Rudraprayaga. The upper or mountain course of the Ganga is about 320 km from Gangotri to Haridwar.



                  The river Ganga flows first west and then south from Devprayag, crosses the Nagtibba and Shivalik mountains, lands in the plains near Haridwar and flows first south and then south east.Between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states, the Ganga is joined by many tributaries. Among them the rivers Ramganga, Gomti, Gharghara, Gandaka, Koshi etc. are the left bank tributaries of Ganga. Yamuna and Shona are notable among the right bank tributaries of the Ganga.The main tributary of the Ganges, the Yamuna, originates from the Yamunotri glacier and falls into the Ganges from the right side at Allahabad or Prayag. Important tributaries of Yamuna like Chambal, Betwa, Ken etc. They originate from the Deccan plateau. Average speed of Ganga from Haridwar to Dhulian in West Bengal.






                The lower reaches of the Ganges - after entering West Bengal and flowing for some distance, divides into two branches named Bhagirathi and Padma near Mithipur in Murshidabad district. A tributary of the Ganga flows southwards over West Bengal called the Bhagirathi-Hooghly and falls into the Bay of Bengal.It is from here that the Ganges descends and flows into the delta. Sundarban delta between Bhagirathi and Padma is the largest delta in the world. Ganga from Murshidabad city to Hooghly city is called Bhagirathi and Ganga from Hooghly city to the estuary is called Hooghly river.In the lower reaches of the Ganges, many rivers meet from the east and the west, such as - Dwarka, Mayurakshi, Ajay, Damodar, Rupnarayana, Kansavati, Jalangi, Mathabhanga etc.
